The author got acquainted with Mrs. Strickland through their common friend. Then she invited the author to her house, where there were a lot of writers, but the author didn't see Mr. Strickland. A bit later Mrs. Strickland invited him to a dinner party, where at last she introduced her husband. He turned out to be a mere man, quite uninteresting and shy. Some days later the author got to know that Mr. Strickland abandoned his wife. It was a shock for everybody and there was a rumor that he did it because of some woman. Mrs. Strickland asked the author to talk to her husband.
