The narrator went to Peris to talk to Mr. Strickland, because his wife pleaded him to make her husband return. It was said that Strickland lived in a luxurious hotel with some unknown lover. However, it turned out that had no money and lived in some shabby building. He gave the narrator to understand that he would never return to his wife, he didn't even care, because he was going to devote hil life to art.
Mrs. Striсkland couldn't imagine her husbant to be an artist. She began to work hard for the sake of her children. Deep inside she agonized, but never let other people see it.
Five years later the narrator met in Paris Strickland and then his friend Dirk Stroeve, who wasn't a gifted artist but had a delicate feeling for art. This man admired Strickland's works. However, Strickland himself wasn't fond of Stroeve, he just mocked at him.
